MIA til the End of August

I have realy been "Missing in Action" this summer and not posted much to this blog. I have been being a grandma in the trenches! Wonderful and fun trenches, but not much computer time. We are expecting two new grandchildren anyday. Helping with prep for that, gardening, company and all the summer chaos, has taken my time. I will be back the end of August! See you then...Paula

Stepping Stones - Grandchildren's Garden

I have a grandchildren's garden and in it are all kinds of (edible) flowers, little toys, fairy garden etc. More details in my book - see info on the side bar.) I have made stepping stones with each grandchild that go in that garden.

I am In The Garden!

We live in Idaho and we have very short summers. The weather is finally nice so I am in the garden. I will post a few activity ideas over the summer. I just planted a fairy garden with one of my darling grandson's.

About Me

My husband and I have been married 34 years - amazing to me that he still loves me! He is a trooper. We have 5 children, 4 daughters and 1 son. We have 5 grandson's. We are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I have traveled alot and lived in several places. Grateful now that we have sunk our roots back home.

Our last daughter got married this past summer and so I am finding myself, trying to re-define my world a bit. I have been doing the mom thing for so long, I feel like a fish out of water. I decided to join the blogging world and found a lot of new friends.

Just in Case the Lights Go Out --->Blackout!

Every fall I always evaluate our "supplies for the winter." I suppose it comes from pioneer ancestors and filters through the generations.
This is an excerpt from my book - Memory Making Grandparents website ____________. It talks about blackout and how to be prepared for it.

It comes without warning. The heat and lights are on one minute and the next they are out. What do you do? Power outages are one of the more common emergencies that happen. They can last a few minutes or several days.
There are many events than can cause a blackout. To simplify, we will focus on a winter storm blackout. The longest our family has gone without electricity because of a winter storm in this area is three days and two nights. The blizzard was so bad it was dangerous to go out. Sometimes the visibility was just a few feet. After it ended it took some time to get everyone’s lights back on. What we had in our house was our resource.
There are several things you need to think through to be prepared for an event like this.
Heat – What would you do if you lost your heat for several hours or days? Do you have enough sweatshirts, blankets and other warm clothing? Do you know how long your house holds heat? What room could you live in if you were without electricity for an extended period of time? What would you use for an alternate form of heat?
Lighting – Do you have flashlights or lanterns that could provide the light you need? (Candles work but can be dangerous in little hands that are not used to them or adults walking around with poor lighting.)
Food Resource - Do you have enough canned or packaged goods in your home to feed your family for several meals or several days? Do you have a manual can opener?
Cooking – If you heated or cooked the food, how would you do it?
Water – Do you know the resources in your home where water is available? If you used the snow, do you have adequate knowledge or equipment to filter it and make it safe to drink? Do you have water to flush toilets? What would you use for dishes if you have minimum water to wash them with?
Communication - How would you communicate with other family members? How would you know what is going on in the community if you were isolated?
Taking care of children and babies – Do you have adequate water, food, diapers, and activities to care for these needs?
It is very wise to schedule an evening to practice going without electricity. Make the preparations you feel you need to and turn your lights out! Children love it. It is an adventure for them, they are not used to playing games by candlelight and walking around in the darkened house. You will find out some very important things such as: how long your house holds heat, if your lighting is adequate, if you have enough blankets, if you can heat water, how your family copes, etc. I would advise practicing the first time with preparing just a snack. Hot chocolate is a good one. You will learn what it takes to heat water and have some clean up. See how well you do and what improvements you need to make before you try preparing an entire meal.
